Discover Spain’s Delightful Rice Dishes: Paella and Arroz con Pollo
Spain is a culinary paradise renowned for its tapas and rice dishes. Once you’re in Spain, you can’t miss the local specialties like stews and rice-based meals.
The most famous rice dish is undoubtedly Paella, a symbol of Valencian gastronomy. Adorned with rosemary and green beans, it’s a feast for the senses, especially popular with Spanish families during Sunday lunch.
Heading further south, you’ll encounter another classic rice dish, Arroz con Pollo. This robust Roman-inspired dish features chicken, fish, or vegetables without frills but offers a delightful taste experience.

My first encounter with Arroz con Pollo was at El Rancho in Cabo de Palos, a charming restaurant with friendly waiters. Despite being cooked over wood, the smoky flavor wasn’t prominent in the dish itself. However, the grilled meat flavor was noticeable.
Recently, I enjoyed Arroz con Pollo again at Pablo Guardiola in Los Belones, an authentic Spanish restaurant with a sunny terrace. The simple appearance of the dish hides a rich flavor, a recipe that any grandmother would be proud of.
With a wide selection of delightful wines, lunch at Paula Guardiola is a true treat. After scraping the pan clean, we walked home feeling satisfied. For me, Arroz con Pollo is a staple on the Spanish menu.
